Delaware, called “The Small Wonder”, “Blue Hen State” and “The Diamond State”, is a state in the Mid-Atlantic region of the United States, bordering Maryland to its south and west; Pennsylvania to its north; and New Jersey and the Atlantic Ocean to its east.
Delaware is the second-smallest and sixth-least populous state. It takes its name from the nearby Delaware River, in turn named after Thomas West, 3rd Baron De La Warr, an English nobleman and Virginia’s first colonial governor.
Delaware became the first U.S. state to ratify the Constitution of the United States, and has since been known as The First State.
Dr. Rebecca Lee Crumpler, born Rebecca Davis in Delaware, (February 8, 1831 – March 9, 1895), was an American physician. As a graduate of New England Female Medical College in 1864, she became the first African American woman to become a doctor of medicine in the United States.
Crumpler first practiced medicine in Boston, primarily serving poor women and children. After the American Civil War ended in 1865, she moved to Richmond, Virginia, treating women and children. Later she worked with the Freedmen’s Bureau to provide medical care for freed slaves.
